Shrove Tuesday Pancakes for Project Compassion

On Tuesday 25th February we launched our campaign to raise money for Caritas and Project Compassion through the selling of pancakes. Many of our 2019 ACYF representatives along with a number of Year 11 and 12 leaders joined staff in preparing pancakes the night before to sell for the Shrove Tuesday fundraiser. It was great to see our senior students lead the initiative and offer their service to a very important cause. In just one morning we managed to raise over $350 and help start our journey towards the target of $10,000. With the enthusiasm of our senior students along with the support of PC classes across 7 to 12, I have great confidence that we will reach this hefty target.

Ash Wednesday

While Shrove Tuesday helped launch our Project Compassion initiatives, the season of Lent began the following day with our traditional Ash Wednesday House prayer services. The event provides a perfect opportunity for our students to return to their various Houses and begin to reflect on the ways that they can focus their attention towards God during the Lenten season. This year the students listened to the story of Jesus and the rich man as written in the Gospel of Matthew. It is a lesson for all of us to separate ourselves from the distractions and attachment to material wealth and to instead look towards enriching our lives more spiritually. This can be done in many ways with one simple way being to give generously to Project Compassion and to engage in quiet prayer and reflection. Many of our staff and students are currently doing this through attendance at the weekly Lenten Prayer Group sessions taking place at the College. I encourage any student who is looking to deepen their own faith to consider attending one of these sessions or to attend a weekly Mass in the Chapel throughout Lent. I look forward to announcing a few other exciting opportunities for our students to engage with their faith in the coming weeks.

Finally a reminder that the GSCC community can also donate funds directly to Caritas and support their College House by visiting the Good Samaritan Project Compassion website here: https://lent.caritas.org.au/goodsamaritancatholiccollegehinchinbrook
